Scar Revision

About scar revision treatment

Whether it’s the result of surgery, an accident, or perhaps a severe skin condition such as acne or measles, it can be very difficult for people to live with a visible scar. Some people find that it damages their confidence and self-esteem.

Whatever the cause, there are a number of treatment options that can have you looking and feeling more like yourself. It is of course important to bear in mind that while treatment can certainly help to improve the appearance of a scar, it may not be able to erase it completely.

What does the treatment involve?

In most cases, treatment comes in the non-surgical form of micro dermabrasion or laser therapy. These act by removing the upper layers of skin, allowing the new skin to re-grow smoother than before and, as a result, reducing the appearance of the scar.  Depending on the scar itself, your consultant may feel that surgery is required.

Treatment typically lasts between 30 minutes and one hour, and is usually performed under local anaesthetic in a one-day hospital visit. In some cases, however, you may be administered general anaesthetic which will allow you to sleep through the experience.

Before embarking on any scar revision treatment, you will meet with a specialist to discuss your option as well as what results you are likely to get from having the procedure – this will vary widely according to your scar, your age and what type of skin you have. And as with any cosmetic treatment, your specialist will also explain what potential risks are involved.

Once your expectations have been managed and a treatment option decided, your procedure will be carried out by one of our fully trained specialists in the comforting surroundings of a private hospital.
